This shirt is made from a 1890s-1900s French bed linen. All spider lace has been hand tatted and woven to create beautifully intricate open spaces. These crossed yarns are a style of counted-thread embroidery in which threads are removed from the fabric and the remaining threads are stitched together, leaving sewn "ladders." An extra large pocket is on the wearer’s right to offset the heavy presence of open work on the wearer’s left. This shirt has a structured, crisp drape and is 100% antique French linen. Only one edge of this textile has the ladder weaving because that was the side meant to be turned down on the bed.
